The Texas Sesquicentennial Commission was created in 1979 by the 66th
session of the State Legislature with the passage of Senate Bill 236.* Its
purpose was to:
"coordinate celebrations of the 150th anniversary
of Texas' independence as a republic and progress
as a state. The celebration will emphasize the
historic, cultural, environmental and social aspects
of Texas, including appropriate past, present and
future highlights."
In essence, the primary charge to the Commission was to put together a
grass roots celebration involving Texans at every level throughout the state.
