dc.description | The University of Texas at Arlington
(UTA) is the sixth largest university in Texas. It
has a student enrollment of more than 22,000
and offers a wide variety of undergraduate and
graduate degree programs. Despite UTA's
importance as an emerging research university
of national recognition, few people are aware of
its colorful and, at times, tumultuous history.
Transitions: A Centennial History of The
University of Texas at Arlington, 1895-1995,
written by Gerald D. Saxon, traces the school's
one hundred year history, taking the reader on a
roller coaster ride over the school's ups and
downs.
UTA began in 1895 as Arlington College, a
small private school located one mile southwest
of the North Texas town of Arlington. For the
next twenty-two years, the school underwent
three name changes and struggled as a private
academy before becoming a branch campus of
the Agricultural and Mechanical College of
Texas (now Texas A&M). While a part of
A&M, the school was known first as Grubbs
Vocational College, then North Texas Agricultural
College, and later as Arlington State
College. As a branch of A&M, the college
experienced the problems and opportunities
brought on by two world wars, the Great
Depression, and a rapidly growing Dallas-Fort
Worth metroplex. In 1965 the college joined
the University of Texas system and, two years
later, became known as The University of Texas
at Arlington.
Based on hundreds of historical sources, such as
archives collections, public records, newspapers,
oral history interviews, and magazine and
journal articles, Transitions documents the
many changes the school has undergone in its
evolution from a private elementary, intermediate,
and high school to the graduate-level
university of today. The book's 165 historical
photographs and lively narrative bring UTA's
past alive, making this a "must read" for
alumni, students. faculty and staff. and anyone
with an interest in the development of higher education in Texas. | en_US |
