1988.1 - Viking Ship Museum at Chicago Lakefront
Abstract
Design work from the 1988 spring semester, Studio Martin Price, School of Architecture, The University of Texas at Arlington. Viking Ship Museum. Cliff Welch. A museum in Chicago to house a replica of a Viking ship sits between the edge of Lake Michigan and a tree-covered park. The project responds with a straight edge at the lake, and reacts with a lyrically rhythmic twisting form that echoes the branching and undulations of the trees in the park. The park extends into the museum, separating it into two sections: the entry to the museum and gift shop, and the gallery that houses the ship. This movement through the trees becomes part of the spatial sequences of the museum.
