DEVELOPMENT OF DIAGNOSTIC PLATFORMS USING SMART TECHNOLOGIES

Abstract

Mortality rate of cancer has not significantly dropped over the past six decades because there is no effective tool for early detection. Likewise, mortality rate of cardiovascular (CV) disease remains alarming due to the lack of convenient and accessible tools for monitoring heart conditions regularly over extended periods of time. In addition, children with speech impediments, people with impaired hearing, and learners of new languages do not have an effective means for improving their speech vocalization due to the unavailability of systems that provide quantitative feedback. Moreover, patients with vocal cord disorders have to endure uncomfortable and invasive diagnostic procedures as a result of inadequate non-invasive methods. As a timely diagnosis is the first step towards treating health condition or any problem, the development of reliable and efficient early diagnostic platforms can potentially reduce costs, improve the quality of life, and save numerous lives. In an era with an ever-increasing dependence on technology and the availability of highly capable electronic gadgets, there lies great potential in harnessing their great computing power to solve many of these problems. In this work, three diagnostic platforms reliant on such technology have been developed to effectively detect cancer, cardiovascular disease, and speech disorders economically, accurately, and early.
