They are involved in many chemical transformation processes in the biological system, such as one-electron and two-electron transfer reactions, dehydrogenase reactions, and intramolecular electron transfer reactions critical to cellular function. Their ability to be reoxidized under aerobic conditions has inspired us to investigate biomimetic transformations with their derivatives, especially in converting NO2 to NO. Besides that, a series of biosensors was designed and investigated to detect NO in the aqueous system. NO sensors were achieved with computational DFT calculations correctly predicting the fluorescence response.
